Alabama Homeschool Laws & Requirements

No Notice Required

Here's what Alabama requires of homeschooling families, reviewed for the 2026 school year.

What Alabama requires

Withdrawing from Public School

Only required if your child is currently enrolled in public school — submit a withdrawal form to the school. If your child has never been enrolled or is under compulsory school age, you do nothing and simply start homeschooling.

Additional Notes

Since SB 38 (effective July 1, 2014), Alabama expressly recognizes "home instruction" as a standalone legal option. NO cover school, church school, or umbrella program is required. NO private tutor is needed. NO notification to any superintendent or school district is required. NO testing, NO curriculum approval, NO attendance tracking, and NO state oversight of any kind. Nonpublic schools and homeschooled students are explicitly exempt from licensure or regulation by the state or any political subdivision, including the State Department of Education. If your child is under school age or has never been enrolled in public school, you simply start homeschooling with zero paperwork. The CHOOSE Act (2025) provides up to $2,000/student in state funds for eligible families.
